Is Salu... ‘Ready’ for a Hat Trick?

It’s less than a month to go for Salman’s Ready. The actor who has managed to give a Wanted in 2009 and an earth shattering hit like Dabanng in 2010 is all ‘Ready’ on June 3, 2011. The music of the film is already out and one can hear the Dhika Chika track from the film being played all across the country. Salman has already assured his fans that they will get to see the typical heroism of Bollywood in this film. Salman who manged a much needed hit with Wanted by remaking the Telugu super-duper hit Pokiri is again back with a remake in the form of Ready. Ready (titled the same in Telugu) was also a smash hit down south a couple of years ago.

With Anees Bazmee at the helm of affairs, a few changes, Sallu’s punch dialogues and the man himself, this film could sure mark a hat trick for the Dabanng star. Wishing Salman all the best for Ready.

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani

If you’ve ever wondered what on earth is on-screen chemistry here’s your one-stop all-purpose encyclopaedia on celluloid magic.

Fasten your ‘see’-it belts, as veteran filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi sheds all his Lajja, pulls out all stops to do a wacky goofy edgeless weightless comedy of characters who walk in and walk out of frames leaving nehind fumes of oldfashioned funnies.

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani is an airtight trapeze down that familiar romantic lane. The starting point seems to be Saawariya.

A wacky loud, opened-up rimless and ritous interpretation of Ranbir Kapoor’s character in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s opera on screen, Prem in Ajab Prem ….adores the fresh scrubbed girl nextdoor Jenny. But she loves someone else.

No it’s not Salman Khan, though in a tongue-in-cheek homage to tabloid realism Katrina meets her idol Salman who drawls to the roadside Romeo Ranbir, “You’re behaving as if you’re making my girlfriend or your own.”

Touche.

As in Saawariya and his more recent films Bachna Ae Haseeno and Wake Up Sid, a major part of the narrative becomes a showcase for Ranbir’s skills as an all-purpose actor who can pull out any emotional response to the most sterile dramatic stimuli.

In sequence after sequence, written to spotlight the young actor’s virtuosity Ranbir rises above the material given to him with glorious gusto.

Even while mouthing corny maudlin sappy dialogues about serving moong-dal ke pakaude to his beloved or plucking stars from the sky for her, Ranbir makes the trite seem just right.

His phenomenal talent gets radiant support from Katrina Kaif who gets better with every film. As the waif with a face so vulnerable and imploring you want to protect it from the harsh rays of evil sunlight, Katrina Kaif is at omce wholesome and haughty, feisty and flirtatious. She’s everyman’s dream-come-true, so why not Prem’s?

Would Ajab Prem… have worked as such a swimmingly sleek showreel for the besotted-boy-meets-the-absentminded-waif’s talew without the same lead actors ? The answer, frighteningly enough, is an emphatic no.

The noticeably over-done comic situations include a cartel of goofy goons who pop up towards the end to join the party. In one laboured sequence of comicality Ranbir must wear Katrina’s bodice and pretend he wears such clothes comfortably to avoid exposing Katrina’s concealment in his home.

The above scene defines the sense of inner-wear weariness that Ranbir and Katrina effectually avoid and alchemize into a watchable potpourri of parodic passion.

This is a rare film that surmounts and jumps over all the hurdles of clichéd plotting and corny dialogues on the sheer strength of its protagonists’ charm and grace. The film wears a bright bouncy sunny look. The location is an obviously papier-mache town filled with a benign bonhomie which doesn’t go beyond the rituals of surface-level romanticism.

And yet, several individual sequences come alive to convey a sparkling potency. Check out those sequences where Ranbir and Katrina stammer under emotional stress both individually and separately.

The couple in Kaminey seems suspiciously rehearsed in comparison. Indeeed, though the material provided to the lead reeks of second-hand emotions Ranbir and Katrina embrace those emotions and make them scrubbed.

Is there a better star-pair than Ranbir and Katrina in recent times? Maybe there is. But who cares. This one just makes you want to cuddle them.

Salim-Sulaiman have slowly emerged as creators of amazing and impressive music. With their next album for the movie "Kurbaan", which has Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan, they have proved their prowess yet again. The album boasts of songs that grow on you and are not typical.

There are five originals and one remix in the album.

"Ali maula", brilliantly sung by Salim Merchant himself, has a dark, edgy beginning. The slow-paced devotional number is impactful and has minimal musical arrangements.

The track also has a remixed version, which is faster and introduces more orchestration.

Up next is "Dua" - it exudes freshness and gets an edge with the vocals. Crooned by two very talented singers -- Sukhwinder Singh and Kailash Kher -- the song begins with English lyrics rendered by Marianne D'Cruz Aiman. It has strong musical backing and a qawwali touch, which makes it interesting.

Then comes title track "Kurbaan hua" that has Vishal Dadlani behind the mike. It reminds of "Nazara hai" from the film "8 x 10 Tasveer". Nonetheless, "Kurbaan hua" is a power-packed rock number that does create an impact.

Next is "Rasiya", which is the best song of the album. With the deep and extremely engaging voice of Shruti Pathak, the sensual number instantly strikes a chord with the listener. A semi-classical song like this has come in the forefront after a long time.

Finally there is a pleasing romantic number "Shukran allah" sung by Sonu Niigaam, Shreya Ghoshal and Salim Merchant. Its mellow arrangements make it a soothing and likeable song.

On the whole, the album is worth checking out. Salim-Sulaiman have done a great job yet again. more bollywood updates

Aamir works hard for 3 Idiots

While Aamir Khan is an extremely talented actor but he was faced by a challenge when he had to 'look' like he was in his 20s for his role in 3 Idiots. He had to work hard on looking, behaving and dressing like youngsters these days do. His inspirations were mostly his son Junaid's friends.

His character in the film, Rancho, is apparently based on his cousin Pablo, who is Mansoor Khan's teenaged son. Aamir likes the way Pablo is so fidgety that he can't stay still for a minute. He doesn't stop to even talk.

Aamir's wardrobe for the film was based on Ghajini director AR Murgadoss. The fact that Murgadoss always wears worn out clothes or T-shirts that are two sizes large for him was taken into consideration. Aamir jokes that he had to first work hard to get eight packs for Ghajini and then lose them all to look lean for 3 Idiots. He also admits to borrowing some clothes from Murgadoss. He feels that it was most important to get into the character and feel young to pull it off well. more ... updates
